Choosing an SLR – Help!?

Hey,

My Canon Powershot that I’ve had for 3 years went dead and it was my first Digital Camera. I’m looking into buying an SLR because I love photography, but my budget is limited. I’d rather not spend anything over $800 if possible.

I need suggestions on what brand and what model to buy for a starter SLR’er.

What I need is:

At least 8 megapixels
Something that will take good night photos
Lenses – do cameras come with a few? Which ones should I get, how much?

If anyone could help me out with anything, it would be appreciated. I also really need a camera for school, which is why I’m kind of in a rush.

Based on your budget, you will be looking at entry level cameras that are usually sold with at least one “kit” lens though some offer two lenses in your price range. The “kit” lens and possibly a solid telephoto zoom to compliment it are likely all you need for now with respect to lenses. There’s nothing currently on the market that offers anything less than 10 megapixels…Anything over 6 megapixels is usually more than enough unless you plan to print posters.

I would suggest checking out http://www.dpreview.com first. You can do side-by-side comparisons and read in depth reviews of most DSLRs at this website. Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony all offer cameras that will readily meet your budget. Ultimately, you’ll need to go to a store and try the cameras for yourself to make the best decision.

All personal biases aside, it is a fact that there are more lenses and accessories available for Canon and Nikon than all the other brands combined. Canon and Nikon are the two brands most used by professionals and have been since everyone was shooting film in the 1980s. Pentax also offers very good value and performance for the money. Sony took o ver the old Konica-Minolta line and marketing it heavily in recent years…Their actual image quality still falls short of everyone but Olympus in my opinion.
