Nikon 35mm f/1.8 AF-S or Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-S for Nikon D40?

I’ve got $500 on hand for a new lens and was wondering what are the pros and cons of both. Currently I only have the kit lens for my D40 and its all I really need but I’ve decided I’ll get a prime lens and wide-angel (if I can find one I can afford). But anyway is the 50mm worth the extra $250 or should I use the money I save to get another lens. I was going to buy the 35mm but a friend told me to always get the best lens you can afford some now I in a loss of confusion which is better lens in general and what are the pros and cons of each.
So are these two lens in a way different enough to were it would be extremely helpful to have both?

It really depends on the intended use of the lens. As a general purpose lens, the 35mm is better suited to the D40, just because of the angle of view. It will be slightly wider than “normal” lens on your D40.

On a 35mm Film Camera, or FX Nikon, the 50mm is a normal lens. On your D40, it will be a short telephoto.

The f/1.4 aperture is a good thing, but f/1.8 isn’t too shabby either, when compared to your kit lens.

For headshots and portrait use, the 50mm would be a better choice for your camera. For just about anything else, the 35mm would actually be a better choice.
