How good is the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens or would the 70-200 VR f2.8 or 18-200 VR be a much better lens to get?
New to photography and just bought a new unused Nikon D2HS with a used 18-70 Nikon lens. Need a few lenses now to start learning. Would like to take pics of aircraft at airports, birds, portrait, cars and motorbikes. What lenses would be best to get? I don’t have pots of money but would like to get a quality lens or lenses.
TSTCBUNNY, the D2HS was £800 with WT1 Transmitter. Comes with a 2 year Nikon warranty. Was the price reasonable?
70-300 VR is the preferred choice of aircraft spotters and bird photographers, so I would recommend that one. It’s also the most popular lens on airliners.net for Nikonians. It’s also the cheapest out of the 3.
70-200 VR is a better quality lens and is faster, but about 3 times the price of the 70-300 VR and not as much reach. If you shoot in low light grab this one. 200mm can be adequate for planes, but it is limiting.
18-200mm VR is an all-around lens. Not very fast, but a convenient one for walking around. IQ wise the poorest of the 3, but it’s long zoom range can be useful. With this you don’t need to change lenses very often.
As for 200 vs 300mm, I use a 55-200mm VR regularly for aircraft spotting and I sure could use longer reach. 200mm is enough for full frame shots of a 737-sized aircraft coming on final approach at 500 feet, but for aircraft photography you could always use more reach for those head-on shots, takeoff shots, close-up airport shots, and close-ups of planes.
Also since you’re on a 4mp camera you don’t have much room for cropping, so get as long as a lens as possible.
