Tamron v. Nikkor?
I just picked up a Nikon D70 and I am trying to find a good lens to start with. I’m an amateur photographer just looking to experiment and have fun. Is Tamron a fairly decent brand of optics? Am I going to notice a whole lot of difference with a Tamron as opposed to a similar sized Nikkor?
You’ll almost always do better with an OEM lens over a 3rd party optic. Remember, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, and the like can make some great lenses, but they are designed to be adaptable to Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus, Sony, and other cameras. There has to be looser tolerances so the lenses can be used with the various autofocusing and metering systems.
One factor to consider – some OEM lenses rotate one direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) for focus and/or zooming, while the 3rd party lenses may turn the opposite way. This can cause some hesitation or confusion if you’re switching lenses in the heat of action. Consistancy of design can’t be be overlooked.
That being said, I’ve used 3rd party lenses over the years and will continue to do so. Why? Budget and convenience are also factors in decisionmaking.
But if you want the best quality, the best choice is OEM.
