what do I do if my Minolta srt 101 camera is missing the take up spool?
I just recently purchased a minolta srt 101 camera off of ebay, and once I received it, I realized that it was missing the take-up spool. I haven’t tried loading film into it, and I haven’t gotten my battery in the mail yet, so I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet. I am very new to film photography, so I have no idea if this is even a problem or not.
so there is absolutely nothing that I can to do to fix this? the camera is completely unusable without the take up spool? there’s no temporary fix or anything?
Take up spools don’t simply go missing – at least not with most cameras – they have to be removed. THere are of course 35mm cameras that have removeable take-up spools but those are normaly bottom loaders which the SRT 101 is not. So a missing taking spool means someone has tinkered with the camera – this may suggest that something was wrong with it and still is. Someone who forgets to put the take-up spool back might not be the right person to repair a camera.
I believe the SR-T 101 is still fully mechanical and the battery is only needed for the light meter. You should be able to try if the shutter works at all. You should do that without film loaded anyway.
Open the back of the camera look through it from behind holding the camera in direction of light source, like a window by day, and fire the shutter. Do this at at a low shutter speed (1/30 or slower) and at a wide aperture (2, 2.8 or so). You should see if the shutter works.
In theory it would be possible to use the camera without the spool as the film really is transported by the sprocket wheels and should curl up in the take up chamber but that’s a risky thing to do for various reasons:
The film might jam, it can get scratched, it can block something because it is not curling up correctly so honestly I would not do it.
If everything else seems to work it might be worth a repair depending very much on the price you are willing to pay. But I doubt that it would be cheaper than getting another one.
So best would be to get a refund from the seller especially if the camera was sold as working or in excellent condition – which a camera with a missing take-up spool certainly is not.
