High End Vivacity With The Sony Ericsson Vivaz
With all the mobile phones models out there, one would think the market is now heavily saturated to make a purchase decision a harrowing experience. But there’s always room for upscale handsets that push the envelope of what a high end smartphone can be. The leading Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson hasn’t allowed its financial distress to get in the way of regaining market leadership in upscale handsets that it redefined with the Satio last year.
It just made its first product announcement first week of February with a couple of eco-friendly handsets in the GreenHeart stable. Another is the trail-blazing Sony Ericsson Vivaz – a slightly tamer version of the Satio that’s also on the Symbian S60 5th edition OS.
Top Notch Features
Its most remarkable feature is its 8 megapixel autofocus and touch-focus camera with LED flash and video light. It has face and smile detection and geo-tagging from its A-GPS receiver – enough to put the Vivaz at the tope of camera smartphones. But it gets better with a full 720p video recording at Blu-Ray quality 24 fps frame rates. This makes it a direct rival to the Samsung Omnia HD with the same HD recording capability and Symbian OS.
Showing off its gorgeous HD video recordings require a matching gorgeous display which in the Vivaz, is a near-HD 3.2-inch semi-wide VGA (360 x 640) resistive touchscreen, supporting 16 million colors typical in Symbian smartphones. There’s the usual accelerometer for auto-rotate according to handset tilt. We only regret it does not have a proximity sensor to disable the screen sensitivity in a call. After that, all the other features are just your typical high end smartphone set.
On the hardware front, this is your basic 3G smartphone on the dual band UMTS (900/2100) with the usual HSDPA at 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA at 2 MBPS for High Speed data connectivity. Of course, it’s also your quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) with GPRS/EDGE on 2.5G data connectivity.
There’s WiFi 802.11b/g with DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 and microUSB 2,0 for wireless and wired data synching, respectively. You get GPS and stereo FM receivers, 3.5mm headphone jack and TV-out (VGA resolution) ports. Its 1200 mAh Lithium-polymer battery provides one of the longest talk times in its class at a remarkable 13 hours and a standby time of 18 days.
Software-wise, the Vivaz has the usual Java-based apps that allow integration with social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as media sharing sites like YouTube and Picasa. It also has PDF and MS office document viewer, Push email, WAP 2.0 NetFront web browser and the WisePilot navigation system and Google Maps supporting its GPS and A-GPS function.
Availability
The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is expected to arrive at its target high end markets by the 2nd quarter. It will come in four body colors – silver moon, cosmic black, Venus ruby and galaxy blue and includes an 8 GB microSD in its retail package. Pricing information is yet to be released but we expect its SIM-free price to come below that of the Satio which is now in the ₤400 price point.
