I’m looking to buy a Canon Eos Digital Camera and considering the D7 and the D50, which would you buy and why?

If you have another suggestion that’s fine but it needs to be a Canon Eos so I can switch the lenses between that and my Film Camera.

I think you actually mean the 50D and 7D…I own the 7D and had the 40D (nearly identical to the 50D) before it. I currently shoot both the 7D and the 5D Mark II. The 50D is a solid camera and if I didn’t own or couldn’t find a 40D, I’d certainly consider it. I do think Canon rushed its 15mp sensor to market in this camera and that they might have been better off if they’d simply adapted the 12mp sensor of the EOS 450D/Rebel XSi to the 50D. All that said, the only downside of this camera relative to the older 40D is it’s rather noisy 15mp sensor.

Now, the 7D is a camera that has likely saved Canon’s hide in the semi-professional and professional camera market. I for one was just about ready to jump ship to Nikon until this camera came along. The 7D is a better camera than the 50D in every measure It’s also better than the 5D Mark II in every way except one, it is not a full-frame camera. At any rate, the 7D has weather seals similar to those found on the 1D/1Ds series and an autofocus system that is the best Canon makes short of that found in the new 1D Mark IV. In continous shooting, the 7D shoots up to 8 frames per second (50D maxes out a 6) but, the 7D’s actual speed is affected by available light. Specifically, the metering system will override your desired speed setting if the meter reads a dark exposure, even in manual mode. This is not something that happens frequently in good lighting conditions but, I have seen it happen while shooting indoors or shooting in overcast or other potentially dark conditions outdoors. It is occasionally bothersome but, not enough to negate all the other benefits of the camera. If you’ve got the money, the 7D is really a fantastic camera.

Something else to consider is a used/refurbished 5D. The original 5D, unlike the 50D and 7D, sports a full-frame sensor with dimension that are identical to that of a frame of 35mm film. This means your lenses will have the same field of view on this camera as they do on your current film camera. So if you go this route, there is no crop-factor confusion and you won’t be giving up any wide-angle coverage you might have with 24mm or 28mm lenses. I will say this, unless you need the speed of the 7D, life is better with a full-frame camera. I am very fortunate to be able to own both but if I could have only one, and I knew then what I know now, I’d have purchased a used 5D instead of the 7D. It is no exageration to say the the original 5D, even though it has been around for five years, still smokes the 7D and every other crop-body camera on the market for image quality, regardless of manufacture. Like they say in racing, there is no replacement for displacement. The 5D’s full-size sensor has larger photo sites, a higher signal to noise ratio and therefore better image quality than is possible on a cropped sensor of the same or higher resolution.
