I have a camera Minolta Maxxum 5000i 35mm SLR (single lens reflex). I'm looking for a zoom lens with a fairly wide range. I consider myself an amateur photographer yet, and need only a little help understanding what these numbers mean. What purpose could be the best, and what else should I consider?

You should also consider its velocity, ie, the f-stop (aperture). A lot of zoom lenses have a number like f / 3.5 to 5.6, which means that the more open you can get is 3.5 in the lowest zoom and 5.6 at the highest level of zoom. If it says only 2.8 or something, that means you can get the same f / stop in entire zoom range. You should also consider what other goal or goals they have. If you already have a 18-50mm lens, then a 35-80mm lens much overlap. Similarly, if you have a 18-55, 70-210 zoom will be much larger still in the adjustment of 55 mm in the other lens.
